As the building sector undergoes a revolution, the demand for BIM qualified professionals is surging, several researchers highlighted the ‘need for BIM skills’ in the construction sector. This demand encompasses advanced competencies like 4D scheduling (time-based project management, construction planning and simulation) and 5D cost estimation(time-based cost management, Value engineering), 6D sustainable and green building design(building performance analysis-BPA) , 7D efficient and optimised post-construction building performance evaluation and facility management(FM), essential for effective project planning and resource allocation.

However, these specialized skills are frequently underrepresented in the education curricula, resulting in a significant gap between industry expectations and graduate preparedness. There are gaps and challenges in BIM education within the academic sector, including limited faculty training, inconsistent curricula, and insufficient hands-on, interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities for students. These deficiencies hinder consistent BIM competency development among graduates, resulting in disparities in skill levels and readiness for industry demands.

To bridge this gap, efforts should be made to equip future professionals with these practical BIM skills, aligning their capabilities with current industry demands. Findings reveal that despite advancing BIM adoption, significant gaps persist in its teaching, particularly the lack of collaborative education within the architecture and engineering disciplines, need for enhanced collaboration between academia and the industry to bridge the skills gap.

Integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM) into training curricula is crucial for preparing industry-ready professionals with the digital competencies needed in the rapidly evolving, technology-driven construction sector. The BIM academy focuses on offering a post-graduate diploma for those under graduates completed building engineering studies such as architecture, civil engineering, electrical, mechanical engineering and construction project management who are aiming offer their knowledge and skills in the building industry adopting to the BIM technology for design and delivery.

The graduates of this course will emerge as BIM project managers, project BIM coordinators, digital asset managers with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills on BIM tools and processes.

    The Advanced Diploma will cover the following subject areas:

  • Understanding of BIM technology and use it for a project

  • Applying the benefits of BIM for a project

  • Develop BEP and Manage BIM projects and BIM Contracts

  • Sustainable Design and practice, and evaluate Building Performance Analysis (BPA)

  • Mixed and Blended Reality technologies (AR/VR/XR)

  • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) and digital fabrication technology

  • Apply BIM and Validate project performance
